Statistics Overview

Zakiya Sackor

Mathematical Statistician
Internal Revenue Service
Washington, DC

B.S. - Mathematics, Tuskegee University
Mathematical Statistician, providing statistical support.
"Take advantage of internships and research programs to obtain hands-on experience."

Sackor:
"Well when I actually got here, I realized that I didn't know as much as thought I did. Especially about statistics. That's what I'm doing -- that's another branch of mathematics, I mean, I was a straight, a pure mathematics major. I took a couple of statistics courses, but I didn't know as much as I thought, you know, as much as I thought I should know. So that's what's making me go back next fall and pursue a master's degree."

Sackor: "Communication skills are very important and I'm working on that every day, and as we can see here, I really don't like speaking much in public and at meetings and things like that. So communication skills -- I wish I'd taken a technical writing course. And things like that, technical writing, communications skills courses, public speaking courses, things like that, you would have to do at work. Often -- very often."

Sackor: "Well, there's so many options within academia, government, and industry that my biggest thing to say to the sophomore, or college sophomore would be to really take -- have as many internship opportunities -- internships, research -- summer research programs, co-ops, anything you can use to get hands-on experience, to know exactly what goes on in the workplace. Experience is the best teacher and that's what I'd really like to say."
