"I think the idea of
keeping a broad view is important." |

"If I had a license plate, my license plate would say Lingula. Lingula is
a Brachiopod that showed up in the Cambrian and although many Brachiopods
are now extinct, Lingula is not. And Lingula survived because Lingula is a
generalist. It never got too specialized. And so my advice to almost
anyone is, it is now becoming a world of generalists. If one evolves too
rapidly into a specialized niche, one niche might become extinct and one
is, therefore, done. So I think the idea of keeping a broad view is
important."

"I think geology is a game an intellectual plays out of doors. And I love
the process part of it; I love the connections part of it. There's nothing
more exciting than talking to Leslie (co-worker) and saying 'gee we
figured out how that worked!' And I guess it's the ability to crack the
nut - to solve the puzzle - it's the light bulb coming on, that's what's
fun about it I guess. That's the most fun."
