"The principal satisfaction to me personally is being able to use geologic
knowledge and the science of geology to save lives, to literally improve
public safety, to protect people's property from floods and earthquakes
and other hazards which are so predominant in the part of the country that
we live in, at the edge of the continent where the world is coming apart
at the seams."

"The mining experience over a decade of working in the minerals industry,
really gave me a basis for going to work in state government in an
organization that regulates mining in order to protect the environment
from some of the consequences of mining and to insure that we can produce
minerals effectively on the one hand and also do it without impacting the
environment long-term. And it was by having a background in the mineral
business that I was able to secure a job in state government."
