Educational Consultant
Chor Weng Tan is
an Education Consultant focusing on engineering education,
continuing professional development, and technology transfer. For 14
years, he was Managing Director of Education at the
American Society
of Mechanical Engineers in New York, NY, responsible for formal
engineering education; pre-college science, technology, engineering
and math education; and career development and continuing education
of engineers and other technical professionals. He served, for two
years, as Program Director for the National Science Foundation in
Washington, DC, responsible for the Presidential Young Investigators
Awards Program, which provided research funding for outstanding
young scholars and engineers. For nearly thirty years, he was
associated with The Cooper Union in New York, NY, as Professor of
Mechanical Engineering, Head of the Division of Engineering, and
Dean of the School of Engineering.
He was a founder
of the Cooper Union Research Foundation, which was established to
provide funding and research project opportunities for faculty and
students in the Cooper Union School of Engineering. He was also
engaged in research in magneto-hydrodynamics and
electro-gas-dynamics at the Grumman Aerospace Corporation. He is a
Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a member of Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, and Sigma Xi honor societies. He served
as a member of several New York City Commissions. He was Education
Consultant to Nankai University in China, and Nanyang Technological
University in Singapore. He is the author or coauthor of over sixty
publications. Chor Tan received a B.S. degree in Mechanical
Engineering from the University of Evansville in Evansville, IN,
M.S. degree and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University
of Illinois in Urbana, IL.
