organizations and universities offer special opportunities for students
considering careers in science, mathematics, technology, engineering,
computing, or medicine. These include scholarships and internships
that provide real work experience in a field of interest. The

corporations, non-profit organizations, professional societies, and
universities. The following is just a short list to show the
diversity of opportunities available. Be sure to check with
prospective schools about scholarship options, and also companies and
professional societies that are focused on the career field you are

Scholarship Program
The National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive
scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are
committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social
science health-related research.

National Science Foundation S-STEM Scholarships
This program makes grants to institutions
of higher education to support scholarships for academically
talented, financially needy students, enabling them to enter the
workforce following completion of an associate, baccalaureate,
or graduate level degree in science and engineering disciplines.

Scholarships
The Science,
Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship
for Service Program has been established by the Department of
Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students
pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Ernest F. Hollings (Hollings) scholarship program is designed to
increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric

Internships
 Many
large and small companies, government agencies, and non profit
organizations offer internships to college students. Some offer
summer work opportunities for high school students too. Within the
field of engineering, these work experiences are considered vital to the
education process and many schools have structured internships or coop
programs built in to the curriculum. Whatever path you choose,
having an opportunity to work -- even for a little while -- in the field
will help you determine if you like the work and if it is really the
career path you wish to pursue. In addition, often an internship
will lead to a job offer post graduation.

Goddard Space Flight Center High School Internship Program
The program engage students who will be high school juniors in
the fall in 'real-time' applications of science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM) in a research-focused work world.

NASA Undergraduate Student Research Project
NASA-USRP
offers undergraduate students across the United States
internships at NASA centers under the supervision of technical
mentors. This prestigious program seeks rising sophomore, junior
and senior students in the disciplines of engineering, math,
computer science and life/physical sciences. Students may apply
for a 10-week summer session or a 15-week spring or fall
session.

Tissue Engineering Initiative High School Research Internships
The PTEI high school summer internship program gives junior and
senior high school students a glimpse into the world of
biomedical research, and a rich opportunity to explore careers
in science, medicine and engineering.

Boston Private
Industry Council Tech Apprentice Internships
TechBoston offers advanced technology courses to equip Boston
Public School students with high-tech skills essential for
success in careers and post-secondary education. The Boston
Private Industry Council (PIC) works closely with TechBoston to
place high school students in industry internships with area
companies.

Apprenticeship Program
SEAP is an eight week summer research opportunity at
participating ONR laboratories for high school students who have
completed at least grade 9, must be 16 years of age for most
Laboratories, and a U.S. citizen. A graduating Senior is
eligible to apply.
