Cupertino, CA

MS, UC Santa Cruz (Earth Sciences)
PhD, UC Santa Cruz (Earth Sciences)
President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Scientist

"Well I think we're really changing things. When I go out and I see us changing the whole standard of care at a hospital in Germany or Japan or here in the U.S. and the patients are getting completely different outcomes -- that means a lot to me. But I've got to say, it's not just in that final result. It's in the process. I see the energy of all the people working here at Norian and how excited they are about that and working together and the chemistry we've developed and the good team spirit and esprit de corps, especially internationally. And running a company and the leadership it involves is really exciting."

Brent R. Constantz, Ph.D. is founder, president, chief executive officer and chief scientist of Norian Corporation in Cupertino, California. Norian Corporation produces Norian SRS=AE (Skeletal Repair System=AE), a cancellous bone cement sets rapidly, allowing immediate fracture stabilization and an early return to function. Over time, the unique cement is replaced by living bone through the body=B9s natural bone replacement process.

Dr. Constantz was a leading authority on biomineralization prior to starting Norian Corporation. Dr. Constantz earned a B.A. in aquatic biology and geological sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an M.S. and Ph. D. in earth sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He conducted post-doctoral research on isotope geochemistry at the U.S. Geological Survey and studied protein-crystal interactions in biomineralization as a Fulbright Scholar at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.

Dr. Constantz arrived at the idea for Norian SRS while conducting field work for his doctoral dissertation. He became interested in how reef-building corals produce their skeletons, and began searching for a way to replicate this type of mineral growth in human bones. Norian Corporation, incorporated in 1987, is named after the geologic stage in which modern reef building corals first appeared, approximately 200 million years ago.

Dr. Constantz is an active member of the American and European Orthopaedic Research Societies, and the American and European Societies for Biomaterials and the Material Research Society. He has made numerous presentations to medical, financial, business and student groups, chaired meetings and edited four books. He has originated regulatory submissions and workshops for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is a member of the Health Industry Manufacturers Association, a group dedicated to the improvement of health care. He has participated actively in several Medical Device CEO gatherings over the last several years.
