Joseph Perpich,
M.D., J.D., is President of
JGPerpich, LLC, a consulting firm for initiatives in the
biomedical sciences, education, and medicine. Over the past 25 years
he has held key leadership positions in biomedical research and
education for philanthropy, industry, and government. Dr. Perpich
was Vice President for Grants and Special Programs (1987-2000) at
the Howard Hughes Medical Institute
(HHMI), where he created and managed the $100 million annual grant
program for science education and international biomedical research.
At the same time he was responsible for the annual Holiday Lectures
in Science, which were presented to local high school students by
HHMI investigators and broadcast nationally and internationally via
satellite and the Internet.
Dr. Perpich has
developed numerous web-based projects. Currently he is working on a
"virtual collaboratory" for the National Institute of Mental Health
and the Fogarty International Center of the NIH to provide tools and
resources for collaboration in neuroscience and mental health
research, education, and training via the Internet. Dr. Perpich also
recently created a web resource, entitled NeuroEd, for advance
placement high school students and teachers utilizing the Dana
Foundation's diverse neuroscience content. At HHMI he initiated
conversion to fully electronic and web-based systems for all aspects
of grant award and management as well as developing multimedia
resources as adjuncts to the Holiday Lectures. For the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Dr. Perpich was
instrumental in designing the
Minority Scientists Network (MiSciNet) portal.
Previously, Dr
Perpich was vice president for planning and business development at
two biotechnology companies, as well as Associate Director for
Program Planning and Evaluation at NIH (1976-1981), where he
directed government-wide activities related to recombinant DNA
research and regulatory policies. He also served at the Institute of
Medicine/National Academy of Sciences (1974-1976), where he
developed a program in legal and medical ethics.
Among his many honors are elections as Fellow of the American
Psychiatric Association and of AAAS, as well as membership in the
Cosmos Club. Dr. Perpich has served on numerous committees and
boards, including chairing the Biotechnology Advisory Committee of
the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association.
Dr. Perpich is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical
School. He completed his residency in psychiatry at the
Massachusetts General Hospital and the National Institute of Mental
Health (NIMH). At the same time, Dr. Perpich studied law at
Georgetown University and received his J.D. in 1974.
